About Prairie du Rocher, IL - Happy to be your hometown Heating & Air Conditioning Contractor!

Prairie du Rocher ("prairie by the rock") was the fourth European settlement in Illinois. This village was started in 1722 just after the founding of Fort de Chartres in an area given to Pierre Duque Boisbrant, the chief builder of the fort, by the Royal Indian Company. Positioned on the verdant countryside below the Mississippi River cliffs now referred to as the American Bottoms, it was an agrarian settlement from the start.  This town’s history and charm are a part of why residents love it.  But, the whole story is much bigger than that.  The town is small, quaint even, like a little piece of history dotted along a landscape of meadows and fields.  Residents watch as the sun beats down on the grain fields in the summer and the ice hardens the ground in the winter.  There is a simplicity to this lifestyle that is very appealing.

It is particularly appealing considering that St. Louis is just 50 miles away.  There, residents have access to good healthcare, business and industry, shopping malls, etc.  But, when they go home they can retreat to a place much less busy and loud and crazy.  People who are looking to raise a family are often attracted to Prarie du Rochere, as are retirees.  But, the town is highly diverse and the arts and culture of this area are celebrated widely.

Located four miles west of Prairie du Rocher is Fort de Chartres State Historic Site.  Fort de Chartres served as the French seat of government and its principal military base.  In 1763, France surrendered much of its land in North America to Great Britain. British troops occupied the fort from 1765 until 1772, when intrusion by the Mississippi River triggered a breakdown of the south wall. Afterward, the remaining walls and structures fell into decay. Nowadays, the site is a museum which features a creative renovation of portions of Fort de Chartres. The fort gateway was remodeled quite a few times. Sections of the fort’s walls were rebuilt on original foundations in the late 80s after it had been named a National Historic Landmark in 1960.  Then, added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1976.  It was clear then that this fort deserved to be lovingly cared for and kept alive.
